Should Men Use Moisturizer?

Contrary to marketing campaigns and popular discourse, men have skin, too; and that skin, be it old or young, dry or oily or sunburnt or weathered or whatever, deserves proper care and attention.

Think about it: your face is a kind of visual, everyday business card. When someone thinks of you, they think of your visage, not your legs or your torso. With studies documenting how people who look nicer get better job opportunities, it literally pays to take care of your appearance. One excellent way to do that is by keeping your skin hydrated.

In this article, I’ll be explaining why men should moisturize their skin. Let’s dive in.

5 Reasons Men Should Moisturize

Here are five reasons why men should incorporate moisturizing into their self-care routine.

1. Moisturizing Helps Avoid Premature Aging

Nobody wants to get older, but father time spares no man. One way to slow him down, so to speak, is to make sure that your skin is properly hydrated.

Moisturizing, particularly on the face, can help maintain healthy levels of necessary compounds like elastin and collagen, which are often damaged by the sun, pollutants in the air, or just depleted with age. Additionally, properly moisturizing can slow down the development of wrinkles and fine lines.

Some moisturizers contain extra ingredients that specifically target age spots and wrinkles, helping you maintain a youthful look as time slides on. These, such as vitamin c and hyaluronic acid, come with extra skin-healing benefits as well, so they’re definitely worth a look.

2. Moisturizing Helps Combat Both Dry and Oily Skin

One of these things might seem obvious: moisturizing can help reduce, or eliminate, the effects of dry skin.

What you may not know, however, is that properly moisturizing can help combat excessively oily skin too! Because moisturizing seals in moisture, oil production in the skin goes down, helping you keep a cleaner looking complexion without drying out the skin.

3. Moisturizing Helps You Avoid Sun Damage

Using sunscreen is, of course, the obvious way to mitigate sun damage; but ensuring your skin is properly hydrated goes a long way in preventing some of the sun’s damaging effects.

The sun dries out the skin, breaks down compounds like collagen and elastin, and causes sunburns. A moisturizer can help reverse this drying effect and replenish the skin.

4. Moisturizing Restores The Skin’s Natural Barrier

The moisture in your skin forms a protective barrier, keeping nasty things like toxins and pathogens out of your body. Without this moisture, it’s much easier for these things to sneak their way in and wreak havoc on your body’s other systems.

The body naturally maintains this, but factors like soaps, heat exposure, humidity, and stress can all break down the skin’s natural barrier. My moisturizing daily, you can add a little additional firepower to this critical system.

5. Dry Skin Can Be Uncomfortable

Seemingly obvious, a lot of men don’t even notice it’s a problem until they’ve solved it. Dry skin can cause discomfort; tightness, pain, itching, a stretched feeling, and flaking are all possible symptoms of dry skin.

In particularly bad cases, the skin can crack and bleed. Not only is this uncomfortable (obviously!), but it can also be unsightly and embarrassing. Moisturizing can help reduce discomfort and ensure that any dry skin doesn’t get out of hand.
